About

Choosing the Right Counselor

PLEASE NOTE: I currently have morning and afternoon hours available for sessions during the week. I am not offering evenings or weekend times. Have you started therapy with someone and feel stuck in a loop of just reviewing your week’s events and not actually chipping away at goals to help you live the life you’re looking for? Are you new to therapy and have no clue where to start? Reading through counselor profiles can sometimes feel repetitive and very generic. Yes, yes, I know you’re going to be warm and empathetic; but what else? I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself to see if I’m the right match for you. My name is Siobhan (pronounced Sha-von, super Irish name) and I use she/her pronouns. I work with adults (18+) in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri via telehealth counseling with a wide variety of concerns and diagnoses. Our first session will be laid back while we talk about the approaches I take in sessions, concerns your wanting to address in counseling, and how we will navigate therapy together. It is a great opportunity to see if we will be a good match not only on paper, but through discussion as well. If you feel we’re a good fit, we schedule from there. If not, we will work together to find a better match for you. No pressure! After that, we will take the next few sessions to do a review of your life history in different areas of your life. This helps me to understand who you are and how you got here. We then work together to make goals for our time together so that you know that you’re making progress and getting what you’re looking for out of the process. We will review these goals periodically to make sure we’re on track or make changes to reflect your progress. There is also a secure messaging system for us to communicate between sessions to help support you as you try on new coping strategies or want to send a topic note for our next session so you don’t forget. I take a structured approach to the session format; however, where we go with topics in session is completely up to you! There may be times that you want to work on finding techniques to manage your symptoms…Let’s do it. There may be times you want to vent about an issue…I’m listening. There may be times you want to dig a little deeper and find some roots…Let’s get our gloves on. I’m invested in your life story, learning about you, and celebrating your successes (big and small). I have an inquisitive mind and an open spirit. I am a big fan of infusing humor (appropriately) in sessions. I am a sex positive, kink supportive, polyamorous/non-monogamy affirming, and 2SLGBTQIA+ safe counselor. You're free to be you. I value all life paths and I welcome you as you are! Making the decision to start (or re-start) counseling can be difficult. Please know that I'm here to help you get started and will be with you every step of the way. Please reach out to me with any questions that you may have to help you feel more comfortable in this process. I'm here to help!
